Striper fishing 4/17 and 4/18
Report posted by Capt. Fran Verdi of the The Drop Off on 4/18/09

4-17-09
Picked up Cousins from Chestnut Neck Marina and had one of the owners out to do some fishing today. Water was 48 to 50 in the Graveling Point area, Stripers were not to be found until the end of the day. We had one 28 and that was it for the incoming tide. Will be running an open boat Sat and have three spots open. Hopping to find a better pick of them with some nicer weather in the next couple of days.

Ran an open boat today with George and Zach. Left the dock a 7am and got to Graveling point area about 8am. Set up for the what was left of the out going tide. Water was about 50. Clams were in the water chum was going and not a hit. The wait was on again. Did not have a nibble for the out going tide. The the tide started to turn and the wind started to blow. It was Tide against the wind not the idea situation. Line were all over the place. But waited and waited until about 2pm and one line went done George had his first striper of the season. It was 25 inches and back in the water it went. George re-baited and about 2:30 the rod gets hit again and the tip almost went in the water. George released the bail a bit and it was game on. The fish broke water at about 20 yards from the boat and it was big. The fight lasted about 20 min. When the fish came to the boat I said, I should have brought the bigger net. Half the fish fit in the net and Zach used the lip grabbers and help with getting the fish in the boat. The fish was 37 inches and fat. It weighted 25 pound and 20 oz. It was George’s biggest strip. Way to go George. And yes George was the only one that got fish today. A Pic is on my web site.
