Inshore Fishing on Sunday, June 28, 2009
Report posted by Capt. Lindsay Fuller of the June Bug on 6/29/09

June Bug fished the Catanese family from Hunterdon County this past Sunday.  The charter was a Father's Day present to Dr. Catanese from his family.  Sea conditions were good but fish were uncooperative.

There were no stripers under the bunker off the beach.  We ran off to Garden State South and did pick up a keeper Fluke while doing a test drift.  The drift wasn't too bad.  A little rocky rolley but acceptable.

We ran off to Barnegat South Ridge.  Trolled for a couple of hours for Bluefish.  Even the chumming boats were not catching.  We could see them on our color machine but no takers.

We drifted for Fluke on top of the South Ridge as well.  Nothing.

Moving back to Garden State North, we did find some Sea Bass that were willing to bite.  Of the ones we caught, only one was a keeper though.  Ofher boats were having the same problems.

We had noticed a strong thermocline all day with fish above and below it.  We finally found out what the marks were when one of our anglers snagged a squid and pulled it in.  If the squid were the reason for the marks on the machine, there had to be billions, yeah, the word they use in DC all the time, of them.

Running back to the inlet, the thermocline and the bait caried all the way until the depth was less than 30'.  Catching is limited due to the fish being well fed on the huge biomass of squid.

Let's go fishing!
